BEV and PHEV registrations increase in January 2021

SMMT’s new figures continue to show a positive trend for fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle registrations, despite the total car registrations having decreased by nearly 40% in January 2021.

In January 2021 there have been 6,260 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) registrations and 6,124 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrids) registrations, compared to respectively 4,054 and 4,786 in January 2020. This means there has been a 54.4% increase in BEV registrations, and a 28% increase in PHEV registrations.

This increase is noteworthy, particularly if we consider that diesel and petrol registrations have decreased by 62.1% and 50.6% compared to this time last year.

BEVs and PHEVs market share has also increased compared to January 2020, by 155% for fully electric vehicles and by 112% for plug-in hybrids.

These figures are at the very least encouraging, as we move towards the 2030 car sales ban and towards a lower-carbon-emissions future.
